It’s almost time to pick up paddles, racquets and even pickleball bats for Bendigo’s This Girl Can week of mostly free, fun activities, designed to inspire.
Bendigo Community Health Services, Sports Focus, Vichealth and the City of Greater Bendigo are inviting women and girls to lace up the roller skates, pick up a footy, jump in a kayak, plus so much more.
Together they are hosting a week of female-friendly activities as part of the This Girl Can movement.
Health Promotion officer Moni Sonsuwan said the week was about creating more opportunities for women be active, no matter their age, background, or abilities.
“Through This Girl Can we’re supporting women to connect with many of Bendigo’s amazing sports clubs and facilities,” Moni said.
She said this year’s program features events at Lake Weeroona, the Kennington parkland, Botanic Gardens, local courts and stadiums.
“We’d particularly love to see anyone who hasn’t exercised in a while, or who might be looking at trying a new sport or returning to a sport they once loved,” she said.
“It’s just about giving things a go, meeting new people and having fun with fitness.”
Jo Cahill, of Sports Focus, said the program would also connect women with many of the city’s diverse sports organisations.
“We hope the clubs and groups involved will provide inclusive spaces to support women and girls to be active well into the future,” Jo said.
This Girl Can advocates for all women – cis, trans, non-binary and gender diverse – to get active in supportive and welcoming environments. These activities are welcoming and inclusive of anyone who identifies as a woman or girl and people from all cultures and backgrounds.
Activities will run from November 10 to 17 right across the city. They include self-defence classes, rowing, walking, tennis, strength sessions, roller skating, yoga and more.
