Top Spin competition gets you thinking about how 'sneaky' advertising encourages drinking

We're teaming up with VicHealth to promote the 2019 Top Spin competition.

What's Top Spin? Well it's a chance for you to win $1000 in a statewide competition but you're going to have to do a bit of investigation first.

You see Top Spin is all about getting you and all other young Victorians to 'call out' the sneaky tactics used to influence you to drink.

Have you noticed there's more delivery options being advertised these days? Here are some of the tricks Top Spin say are being used to encourage young Victorians to drink.

  • Photographs from festivals or clubs used by alcohol companies to promote their brands on social media without the permission of people appearing in them.
  • Alcohol advertising on sporting fields.
  • Alcohol companies using ads and influencers to slide into your Instagram feed.

Top Spin recognises young people are pretty clued in to what's happening and want you to call this behaviour out.

The competition will run from April 9 to May 12 and is open to all young Victorians aged between 18 and 29 years.

To learn more about Top Spin and how to enter visit the official website: www.topspinvic.com.au

All you need to do is use a text message, image or video to 'call out' a sneaky tactic being  used by the alcohol industry to get you to drink more.

A $1000 prize will be awarded each week with three $100 vouchers as minor prizes.

You can also win a $1000 Judges Award or three Judges' Shout Outs which carry a $100 gift voucher which recognise outstanding execution of an entry, clearest #topspinvic tactic or the most compelling story.

The judging panel will consist of a group of young Victorians.

Top Spin is a VicHealth initiative supported by the Alcohol Policy Coalition, AGDA, LCI Melbourne, Melbourne Polytechnic, Monash University, Swinburne University of Technology, The University of Melbourne, Youth Affairs Council Victoria and the YMCA.

Bendigo Community Health Services is supporting the Top Spin initiative as our Alcohol and Other Drugs services see too many young people running into trouble from drinking alcohol.

It's time to think about your drinking and be responsible.
