A full room of diverse community members gathered at our Wanyanimbik Wayawan Wellbeing Centre to explore our new Alcohol and Other Drugs traineeships last week.
AOD Operations Manager Cilla Boucher said the team was thrilled with the interest and enthusiasm in the room from the 27 potential applicants.
“We welcomed people aged from 19 to 61 and from incredibly varied backgrounds – commercial cleaners, chefs, council workers, builders, disability support workers, community workers, bar attendants, and students,” Cilla said.
“Many shared they’ve always felt drawn to this field, but their lives took different paths. Now they’re ready for meaningful change.”
Lived experience brings valuable perspective
Many attendees openly shared their lived experience with substance use and mental health challenges – either personally or as friends and carers of those affected.
“Some of our most engaged participants were previous clients who have navigated their own recovery journeys,” Cilla said.
“This firsthand understanding is invaluable in our work.”
Welcoming diversity
BCHS is actively seeking applicants for the four traineeship roles from all backgrounds, with particular encouragement for:
- LGBTQIA+ community members
- First Nations people
- Those with lived experience of addiction and substance use disorders.
Current trainees share their success stories
At the information session, current trainees Jason and John shared their transformative experiences. Previously a builder and a baker respectively, they’re now completing their traineeships and will become qualified AOD workers later in the year.
“This traineeship has completely changed my life,” said John.
“I love what I do now. I’ve felt supported throughout the entire journey and I’m genuinely excited about my future in this field.
“Making the career change was the best decision I’ve ever made.”
