There’s a higher purpose to Wendy Whelan’s Christmas excursions this month. The Bendigo Family Day Care Educator from Marong has been visiting the local post office with her day care kids, armed with letters to Santa.
“Connecting with the local community is such a wonderful way to help children feel more secure and confident in their environment,” Wendy says.
“When they can explore different places and meet people in the community, it expands their sense of belonging and safety. For myself, getting out and about is not only refreshing but also provides a break from routine, which is so important for my own well-being.
“These outings, whether to local parks, shops, or community events, offer everyone a chance to refresh mentally and emotionally. They also provide valuable learning experiences for the children, fostering curiosity and social skills. It’s great to see how these outings contribute to both the children’s and your mental health in such a positive way.”
The colourful, decorated Christmas wish lists from the children have also been a great excuse for Wendy to get into the spirit.
“Anyone that knows me knows how much I love Christmas and the magic it brings, especially when shared with young children,” she says.
“Watching their faces light up while crafting or admiring Christmas decorations is such a joyful experience. You’re not just creating memories for the children, but you’re also able to immerse yourself in their joy and excitement, which makes the season even more meaningful. It’s such a beautiful way to celebrate the holiday spirit.”
And as the year winds down, Wendy is also preparing for the annual shift that goes hand-in-hand with helping children grow; as some loved little people head off to kindergarten or school, others will join the fold.
“Watching them develop, and gain confidence as they transition to the next step is such a fulfilling part of what we do,” she says.
“It’s lovely that they share their new experiences with us, showing how excited and confident they are about their next steps. We also hope to welcome new friends to daycare in the new year.”
Wendy wishes to thank the parents of her young charges for their support throughout 2024.
“Their encouragement for these outings really helps create a positive, engaging environment for everyone involved,” she says.
“A special thank you to Emma at the Marong Post Office (Pictured here with the children). Collaborating with local businesses helps strengthen community connections, and it’s lovely that Emma has worked with me to help keep the magic of Christmas alive.”
Bendigo Family Day Care, which is part of Bendigo Community Health Services, is seeking more Early Childhood Educators to join the team and be supported to run their own home-based business. For more information see our webpage, and submit an expression of interest.
