Get your skates on, it’s almost time for This Girl Can Week!
Bendigo Community Health Services, Sports Focus and City of Greater Bendigo is inviting women and girls to lace up the roller skates, jump in a kayak, pick up a tennis racquet, exercise their green thumbs, plus so much more.
Together they are hosting a week of fun, free, female-friendly activities as part of the This Girl Can movement.
Sports Focus Project Coordinator Tamarra Feguson said the week was about creating more opportunities for women be active in the local community, no matter their age, background, or abilities.
“This Girl Can Week supports women to get back into an exercise they once loved, or to try something completely new,” Tamarra said.
BCHS Senior Health Promotion and Engagement Officer Siobhan Sullivan said this year’s program took advantage of the beautiful parks, gardens and waterways in and around Bendigo, so it was also a great opportunity to enjoy the city’s great outdoors.
“There’s no judgement if you haven’t exercised in a while, all that matters is that you give something a go,” she said.
“No matter your skill level, we encourage you to come along and try some of the activities on offer.”
Siobhan said the program would also connect women with many of the city’s diverse sports organisations.
“We hope the clubs and groups involved will provide inclusive spaces to support women and girls to be active well into the future,” she said.
This Girl Can advocates for all women – cis, trans, non-binary and gender diverse – to get active in supportive and welcoming environments. These activities are welcoming and inclusive of anyone who identifies as a woman or girl.
Activities will run from October 9 to 15 right across the city. They include self-defence classes, rowing, paddling, walking, tennis, strength sessions, gardening, and yes, even roller skating!
